The earthquake in Haiti has been horrific. And we, collectively, need to help. The issue I want to raise is, to do some digging before you donate your hard earned money. Make sure that the money you give will go to the people you want it to go to, and will buy the relief you want it to buy...
Unfortunately, there are people out there who will take advantage of grave situations like this for their own benefit.
I no longer give to people who knock on my door, or phone me up, or stand outside stores I frequent. I just do not know how much of my money will go where I want it to go.
I have done my investigations and have a set of charities I donate to regularly. I know the amount of money (percentage of total revenues) spent on overhead, and how much money get to the people who really need it.
I realize that not everybody that knocks on my door, or phones my house, or stands outside stores is disreputable, but the problem, for me, is that I cannot tell the "good" charities from the bogus ones...
If you really want to help, take the time to ensure that your help will get to where it is really needed !!!
